Phuong Anh tells you everything about Paris
How could anyone miss Phuong Anh? This dynamic 24-year-old, currently in her second year of a Master’s program, didn’t miss a single one of our activities for a whole term. Always eager to participate, she agreed to share her thoughts on moving to Paris in September 2024.
Why did you decide to study in France for a year, and why in Paris?
I decided to study in France firstly because, for my field (fashion), Paris is the most ideal place. Secondly, I chose France because I already speak some French, and the cost of living is more reasonable compared to other major cities around the world, like New York.
Where did you learn French?
I started in high school. I went to a language high school where I learned English and French.
What are your impressions of Paris?
I have to be honest, at first I was shocked because Paris wasn’t at all like the image I had in my head. I imagined charming Haussmannian buildings and beautiful, romantic streets, and that was about it. Not at all the metro system, which is a bit outdated, or the streets, which are a bit run-down in some districts… So, when I saw them, I was a little surprised. But that’s the reality of moving. When you live in a city, you see the more glamorous sides, and the less appealing ones too.
Why do you like Paris?
I like Paris because there are so many things to do. Always. There are bars and pubs open until morning. The restaurants are varied in terms of price, quality, cuisine, etc. Museums are free for those under 26. The architecture is beautiful, the atmosphere is relaxed, I can meet friends from all over the world; it’s a very enriching experience.
What about your experience with practicing French?
I practice my French by speaking with my Francophone friends whom I met at the club, in the streets, at the supermarket, practically in all my daily activities—except at school where I speak English because I’m in an English-language program. I’d say I’m fairly comfortable with the language, but I haven’t reached an advanced level.
So, how and why did you start going to the Club?
I started going to the club in September. I had just moved to Paris and I was feeling a bit lonely and isolated. So I went online to find associations to join and I came across the Club. I did a trial session, I really like the kindness of the members at the club, and then I signed up.
What activities?
In September, October, and November 2024, I participated in almost all the activities offered: workshops, cultural events, visits, evenings with friends, etc.
You participated in several activities. Which one did you like best?
I like the language workshops best because they allow me to get together with friends and practice my French while discussing topics that interest me, since we can suggest topics we’re passionate about at each workshop.
Did you meet many people in Paris?
Yes, thanks to the club, I made two friends who are also members. Outside of the club, I have classmates from school and friends I’ve met while going out.
You do a lot of activities at the club. Do you also go out on your own, without the club?
Yes, I go out with my friends from school. Besides that, I go out with friends I’ve met online.
What did your experience in France bring you?
My experience in France gave me self-confidence because I have to do everything myself and decide what path to follow in my life. It gave me independence, a sense of responsibility, and with all that, self-confidence.
The Club promotes values of openness and multicultural exchange. Has that changed anything for you?
Yes, it allowed me to better understand French culture and led to the beginnings of a beautiful friendship with my current friends.
What are your plans for the future?
I’d like to enroll in another Master’s program with an apprenticeship contract, and then I’ll try to find a job. I don’t know if my future will remain in France, but I’ll stay for at least two or three years.
Would you recommend the International Club?
Absolutely, I think it’s a fantastic idea! I even tried inviting my classmates to the International Club. But I think they prefer going out to clubs and partying to sitting quietly and chatting with people.
We wish Phuong Anh continued success in her career. She will always be welcome at the Club!
