Discovering Roller Hockey | A Report on an Unforgettable Sporting Experience

Recently, the club members and I had the chance to live a unique and energetic sporting experience: an introduction to roller hockey. And here is the report. For those who wonder what it is, imagine a combination between ice hockey and an intense skating session. We exchange the ice skates for roller skates, the rink for a hard surface, but the adrenaline and thrills remain the same.

Roller hockey, although still little publicized, deserves all our attention. It skillfully combines strategy, speed and agility, offering a technical and captivating show. The values of mutual aid, respect and self-improvement that drive this sport are felt both on and off the field. This immersion allowed us to understand the subtleties and appreciate the warm atmosphere that reigns within this very passionate community.

As soon as we arrived, we were introduced to the sport without putting on skates, since it was a first for most of us. The supervising team, full of enthusiasm, guided us through the basics of this sport. The first step? Understand movements and strategies, even without being on wheels. It wasn’t easy for everyone, but the desire to learn and the laughter still set the pace for the afternoon.

We then discovered the basics of puck control, this small black puck that seems to have its own will sometimes. The simple act of moving it straight forward is a feat for beginners! But once we start to understand the basic techniques, we quickly get caught up in the game. Passes fly, bursts of laughter too.

But the afternoon did not stop at this initiation into the sport. We also had the chance to witness the warm-up of two of the best roller hockey teams in the Paris region. And there, it was serious. The players glided with impressive fluidity, their gestures perfectly mastered and coordinated.

During this warm-up, we saw some little prodigies of rollerblading. Some had learned to skate almost before knowing how to walk! We were also able to see future great champions who, through their determination and mastery, gave us a beautiful desire for curiosity.

The highlight of the day was of course the match. An intense match that kept us on the edge of our seats from start to finish. The exchanges were intense, the players competed in strategy to score goals. The cries of support from the families were heard from the stands, adrenaline was at its peak.

After this little emotional roller coaster, we had the immense privilege of meeting the players from the Villeneuve team. Of great simplicity and generosity, they took the time to discuss and take some photos with us.

This unexpected meeting with roller hockey showed us how enriching sports exploration could be. Discovering new disciplines allows not only to push one’s limits, but also to meet enthusiasts who share their know-how with inspiring generosity. The experience convinced us that there is always an adventure to live, you just have to start and keep your mind open. With a good dose of sweat, laughter, and shivers, we leave with unforgettable memories and, who knows, maybe new vocations among the club members.
