Excursion to Auvers-sur-Oise

A day in the colours of the Impressionist painters.

—–> Upcoming excursion : saturday 18 april 2026 <—–

AUVERS-SUR-OISE

Auvers-sur-Oise inspired many painters. It was Vincent van Gogh who brought the village lasting fame in 1890, when he came to live there during the final three months of his life.

From Van Gogh to Pissarro, as well as Cézanne and Daubigny, this village, founded in the Middle Ages, still bears the mark of the Impressionists of the late 19th century. Auvers-sur-Oise has preserved the charm and peaceful atmosphere that captivated Van Gogh and so many other painters.

The Church of Auvers-sur-Oise

Overlooking the village, the Church of Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption is one of the most striking landmarks in Auvers-sur-Oise. Built in the 12th and 13th centuries, it captivates visitors with its Gothic architecture and richly carved details, partly inspired by Notre-Dame de Paris.

It is above all thanks to Vincent van Gogh that this church became world-famous: he immortalized it in his painting The Church at Auvers, created in 1890. Even today, it draws visitors from around the world who come to follow in the artist’s footsteps and experience the village’s unique atmosphere.

The Auberge Ravoux

In the heart of Auvers-sur-Oise, the Auberge Ravoux, also known as the “House of Van Gogh,” is a must-see for anyone interested in the painter’s life. It was here that Vincent van Gogh stayed during the final days of his life, in a small room that has remained remarkably simple.

The inn has preserved the charm and atmosphere of late 19th-century artists’ cafés. A visit offers an intimate glimpse into Van Gogh’s world, while also evoking the lively and inspiring spirit of the time, when painters, writers, and art lovers gathered around the table.

The Cemetery

A visit to Auvers-sur-Oise would not be complete without stopping at the cemetery, located just outside the village on the heights overlooking the Oise Valley. It is in this simple and peaceful setting that Vincent van Gogh and his brother Theo rest side by side.

Their twin graves, covered with ivy, have become a place of reflection and emotion for visitors from all over the world. Quiet and moving, this site deepens the experience of Auvers by reminding us of the profound connection between the village, painting, and the memory of Van Gogh.

Daubigny’s House and Studio

Daubigny’s House and Studio is one of the most authentic and charming places in Auvers-sur-Oise. The painter Charles-François Daubigny, a major landscape artist of the 19th century and a forerunner of Impressionism, created here one of the village’s very first artistic hubs.

What makes this house truly exceptional is that its walls were decorated by Daubigny himself, his family, and close friends, including Camille Corot. Stepping inside reveals an intimate, poetic, and deeply inspiring place that helps explain why so many artists fell in love with Auvers.

Musée de l’absinthe

Original and full of character, the Absinthe Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the atmosphere of the 19th century. Through the story of this legendary drink, once deeply associated with cafés and artistic circles, the museum reveals an entire way of life.

Photographs, objects, posters, songs, and period documents bring back a world of creativity, sociability, and cultural excitement. It is a visit that is at once playful, surprising, and evocative, offering a different perspective on society and on the artistic world during the age of the Impressionists.
