A visit to the American Library in Paris : an immersion in the heart of English-language literature
Looking for an inspiring place to practice English in Paris, we discovered a true gem nestled just steps from the Eiffel Tower: the American Library in Paris. More than just a library, it’s a unique resource center where English-language literature reigns supreme. For a few hours, we immersed ourselves in a warm, welcoming atmosphere, resolutely focused on the discovery and sharing of knowledge.
It has to be said: reading in the original language allows you to fully appreciate the musicality, humor, and intensity of a text. But access to quality books is essential. English sections are often too limited in traditional libraries. Here, there’s no frustration: the shelves are filled with books in their original language, covering a wide variety of subjects—literature, of course, but also social sciences, history, arts, gardening, DIY, personal development… A real treat for reading enthusiasts and anyone who wants to improve their English at their own pace.
The American Library collection has everything you need.
Our visit began with a very warm welcome from Eve B., who gave us our visitor badges. Once we had settled in, we took our time exploring the different areas. What strikes you first is the serenity of the place. Right in the heart of the 7th arrondissement, on a quiet street, the library offers a peaceful respite from the hustle and bustle of Paris. A haven of calm where you can settle down to read, study, or simply browse among the shelves. For example, we stopped to admire a beautiful edition of Julia Child’s “Mastering the Art of French Cooking,” giving us an opportunity to discuss the global fascination with French cuisine.
We particularly appreciated the richness and diversity of the collections. The children’s section is well-stocked, with a selection suitable for both children and teenagers. It’s the perfect place to introduce younger readers to English. Activities are also regularly offered to them, making it a lively and intergenerational space.

Another highlight is the selection of recent English-language magazines and newspapers. There really is something for everyone. You can also play board games in English, which is a fun way to practice the language in a group, in a relaxed atmosphere. A pleasant surprise!
A resource center conducive to education
For students, researchers, or freelancers, the place is ideal for working. Members can even reserve rooms for privacy or to organize small group work sessions. It’s easy to see why so many people, both English and French speakers, return week after week.

Beyond books, the library offers a rich cultural program: lectures, readings, writing workshops, book clubs… Everything is conducted in English, providing excellent opportunities to challenge yourself and improve your comprehension and expression. The library attracts a curious and dynamic international community, united by a shared passion for the English language and cultural exchange. It’s also a wonderful way to meet people and feel like you’re somewhere else, as if transported to an American university in the heart of Paris.

Don’t hesitate to come to the American Library in Paris!
A few practical details for those considering a visit: access to the library is reserved for members (monthly or annual subscription). A guided tour of the building in English is offered every Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.: an excellent starting point for discovering the history of this institution, which is celebrating its 105th anniversary this year! Originally founded to provide access to reading for American soldiers and nurses, the American Library has evolved while remaining true to its original mission: to make reading accessible and engaging.
As we left, we promised ourselves we would return. To borrow a novel, attend a lecture, or simply enjoy a quiet moment immersed in the English language. A visit to the American Library is much more than a cultural outing: it’s a gateway to a world of knowledge and discovery.
If you would like to continue your language immersion, we invite you to join our language exchange workshops which take place every Tuesday evening.
