A town by the sea

Amsterdam is a town best explored on foot, by bicycle, by barge along the canals or on public transport. Its sites of indisputable beauty are all located within walking distance of each other. Nearly 1300 bridges cross the town’s 160 canals, you will be spoilt for choice with the various activities, wander around and take in the charms of a city built on water. .


When night falls, the streets transform, the monuments are lit up, the bridges sparkle with lights and there is a party aura above the canals. This is the best time to experience the city’s unique carefree and lively atmosphere.

Whether by boat, on foot or by bicycle it is impossible not to fall for the charm of Amsterdam’s winding canals.

Amsterdam: a museum in itself

Amsterdam is of course well known for its museums. The Dutch capital boasts more than 50 museums. Among the most famous being the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh museum and the house of Anne Frank…Other than museums, Amsterdam is home to no less than 7000 houses classed as historical monuments which you will discover during your walks

The Rikjsmuseum  

The Rikjsmuseum began as a collection started by the royal family in the eighteenth century and displayed in the royal palace. Created in 1808 by Napoleon I’s brother, Louis Bonaparte, then king of Holland, this museum is comprised of almost all the major works of art of the Dutch golden age.

You will discover the paintings of the Dutch golden age (seventeenth century), in particular Night Watch, Rembrandt’s self-portrait and Vermeer’s Milkmaid.

Itinerary :

Friday night
Meet at midnight (00.00) at place de l’ Opéra Garnier, on the steps in front of the opera to leave for Amsterdam

Saturday

  • Arrive at Amsterdam at around 8am
  • Boat trip with commentary along Amsterdam’s canals (participation 8 euros)
  • Free time to visit the town and its monuments: Van Gogh museum, Anne Frank’s house, the Tropenmuseum, cycle ride….etc
  • Evening meal (not included) and socialising
  • Spend the night in a youth hostel in the town centre

Sunday

  • Breakfast at the hostel
  • Free time to walk around and then visit: Rembrandt’s house, the Rikjsmuseum, the maritime museum and the red light district...
  • Evening meal (not included) and socialising
  • Meet at 11pm at the youth hostel in order to leave for Paris and arrive in Paris at around 7am
   

Vondelpark

Discover Vondel Park, an excellent place to have a picnic or relax .

Vondel Park is named after the great seventeenth century playwright and poet. A statue, erected in 1867, pays homage to him. Vondel Park is a 45 hectare English garden with countless trees, fish ponds and fountains…In summer, there is an open-air theatre where free concerts are performed on hot days..

The Van Gogh museum

The Van Gogh museum displays the world’s largest collection of Vincent Van Gogh’s art work: more than 200 canvases, 500 drawings and 700 letters. The museum also includes art work by other nineteenth century painters and sculptures.

Here his most famous paintings are brought together: the Sunflowers, Vincent’s house at Arles and his bedroom…The museum is unique because it allows its visitors to trace the evolution of the paintings with regards to events in the artist’s life.
